Description
The IEO-CSIC National Center, dependent on the Ministry of Science and Innovation, created in 1914, has been dedicated to research in marine sciences, especially in relation to scientific knowledge of the oceans, the sustainability of fishing resources and the marine environment. In addition to his dedication to basic and applied research, he also provides scientific and technological advice to administrations on matters related to oceanography and marine sciences. The IEO-CSIC has its headquarters in Madrid and nine coastal oceanographic centers, many of which have important zoological collections, made available to the international scientific community. The Gijón Oceanographic Center (COG) is located at Avda. Príncipe de Asturias 70bis 33212 Gijón (Asturias). It has a Collection of benthic invertebrates in the process of organization, in which the sub-collections are already constituted: 1) Collection of sponges from Antarctica (CPORANT-IEOG), 2) Collection of sponges from Patagonia (CPORPAT), 3) Mozambique Sponge Collection (CPORMOZ) and 4) Cantabrian Sponge Collection (CPORCANT) The CPORANT-IEOG sub-collection is part of the results obtained in the Spanish Antarctic campaigns BENTART-94, BENTART-95, GEBRAP-96, CIEMAR -99/00 and BENTART-2003. It has 986 copies cataloged and made available to Gbif. The CPORPAT-IEOG, CPORMOZ-IEOG and CPORCANT-IEOG sub-collections are recently created, whose purpose is to expand the COG collection to include specimens from other areas and to be able to carry out connectivity studies. Data from this collection has not yet been made available in GBIF.Overall information
Goals
Study of the biodiversity of Antarctica.
Strengths
